New Year, New You: How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Actually Achieve Your 2025 Goals

Do you feel like you’ve been stuck in the same place year after year, month after month, week after week - despite your best efforts to move forward in life? Are you a hard worker, but you haven’t been reaping the benefits of all that effort you put in? Does it seem like you are struggling with “bad luck” or just being surrounded by perpetual negative events in your life? If this sounds like you, keep reading because you may actually be getting in your own way, and we can shed light on what you can do to start moving the needle forward.

What are limiting beliefs?

If you answered yes to the questions above, you could be battling some unconscious thought processes or assumptions that are holding you back called limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are your deep rooted beliefs you hold about yourself, the world, or others around you - and they do exactly as they are named - limit you. These deep rooted beliefs are playing out in your day to day actions which are not always easy to correlate as being your own doing due to them having been normalized in your brain for so long. Limiting beliefs can originate from childhood experiences, trauma, social media, and society expectations. Let’s break it down a little further.

Why do I feel stuck in life?

Limiting beliefs are holding you back from achieving your goals because regardless of what actions you take, if deep down you believe you are not going to succeed, then that energy and those thoughts is what controls the outcome of your actions. For example, if you hold the limited belief “I am not worthy of love” but you try again and again to find a healthy long lasting relationship, you may actually find yourself constantly dating unworthy partners that never amount to long term relationships. This will continue to perpetuate your unconscious limited belief that you are not worthy of love which reinforces the same outcome each time i.e. you go after unworthy partners. Now, you might be wondering how you would even know if you hold a limited belief since it is so deeply rooted in your psyche or in other words, your subconscious mind.

How would I know I have a limited belief?

There are some telltale signs that you can look out for in your actions or in your conscious thought processes that will allude to your subconscious limiting beliefs. Here are some common signs:

  • Negative events seem to be consistent for you. Pay particular attention to patterns where it shows in specific areas of your life such as your dating life, career, money, etc.

  • You’ve been attempting to grow in life, but you are stuck in the same place.

  • You’re a hard-worker but you’re not making true progress.

  • Everything feels out of your control and you have a victim mentality.

  • You spend more time feeling overwhelmed than taking action.

  • You make a lot of “should statements” i.e. “I should, they should, it should’ve, (fill in the blank).”

Good news is you have the ability to change your beliefs and start living a more fulfilling life. Keep reading for tips on how to start now.

Limiting beliefs do not have to be permanent.

You have the power to change your life. Just as you learned the beliefs and then consciously or unconsciously took steps or paid extra attention to events that fed and grew that belief, you can equally do the same in the reverse to a more helpful, empowering belief.

  1. The first step would be to identify the area in your life where you feel the most stuck. Then begin to uncover your deep rooted belief by considering your childhood experiences, any trauma you may have undergone related to this area of your life, etc.

  2. Begin to challenge your beliefs, instead of allowing them to remain as your only truth. Ask yourself, have I been taught directly or indirectly a potentially negative thought related to this area of my life?

  3. If the answer is yes, then you need to start making more conscious efforts to find evidence to contradict what you were originally believing. In other words, gather the receipts.

  4. Once you have noticed alternative possibilities, begin to reframe that initial limiting belief to one that is more accurate. This will unleash your power to see how your life can actually change because the possibilities are already there.

  5. Now the final step in the process is to continue to take actions and continue to focus on the evidence that supports that new belief. This is how you make it stick.

Of course, this process can take time to manifest, but just as you woke up one day and realized you were actually living a limiting life as a result of limiting beliefs and it seemed sudden, the same will be true for your new mindset that manifests itself into your new life. You will wake up one day and it will feel as though your changes happened overnight. Just continue to put in the effort.
