Going Into The New Year Stronger Than Ever: Tips on Practicing Self Compassion

Now that Christmas has passed, are you feeling this pressure to start the New Year off strong? Do you feel like it’s time to make a lot of changes in your life, start fresh, and be a new you? As common as it has become for people to rush into the New Year with this renewed mindset and purpose, we also want to emphasize the importance of practicing self compassion to prevent burnout.

What is self compassion?

Self compassion is treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and empathy. Consider how you may speak to or treat a friend, then be intentional about doing that for yourself. Practicing self compassion has many benefits. Some of which include:

  1. Improved mental health

  2. Better resilience

  3. Improved relationships

  4. Enhanced emotional regulation

  5. Increased motivation

  6. Reduced stress

Tips for being kinder to yourself

Practicing self compassion can be challenging, especially when it’s new. Some potential barriers to practicing self compassion can be false belief that negative self-talk motivates you, feelings of shame or guilt, lack of awareness you may struggle with low self compassion, and false belief that self compassion is equivalent to self pity.

If you are struggling with lack of self compassion, here are some tips to start implementing that can help build you up.

  1. Express gratitude

  2. Practice mindfulness

  3. Ask for help

  4. Forgive yourself

  5. Daily affirmations

  6. Prioritize self care

  7. Write yourself a note

  8. Set boundaries

  9. Consider what you may tell a friend in your situation

  10. Challenge your limiting beliefs
