Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that can occur after someone experiences a traumatic event. A traumatic event is classified as an experience someone undergoes that leaves them feeling overwhelmed or highly stressed as a result of a threat of serious harm or danger to oneself or others.
Anyone can undergo a traumatic event. According to the World Health Organization, around 70% of the United States population will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Of that 70%, around 5.6% will experience post traumatic stress, and almost 5% of the world population will experience PTSD in their lifetime. The likelihood of you experiencing post traumatic stress disorder after a traumatic event can be dependent on many factors.
Why then does one person develop PTSD after a traumatic event, but another person may not? The reasons can vary. Some contributing factors that could increase the likelihood of developing PTSD include undergoing multiple traumatic events, the intensity of the traumatic event, having lower education levels, a history of family mental illness, and a personal history of mental health disorders. Another important key to remember that could contribute to developing post traumatic stress disorder is having social support after the traumatic event.

We help to address common concerns surrounding trauma therapy that arise
What if talking about the traumatic event is retraumatizing for me?
One purpose of therapy to treat trauma is to allow you the opportunity to not relive the traumatic experience, but rather to create an alternative experience of what happened. In doing so, you will be able to build resilience around the trauma. You have already undergone the worst part and survived, so now it is time to figure out a way to thrive again.
What if I feel worse when doing trauma therapy?
It’s not uncommon for people to report having an increase in their symptoms right before there is a significant decrease and improvement. Luckily, the benefit to practicing vulnerability in therapy is that it is a safe space specifically designated for you to be able to try something new and get real time support while doing it. The therapy we offer is also structured to provide you with coping mechanisms and skills to build resilience that can be practiced during sessions when difficult emotions are present.
What if I don’t believe I can get better due to repeated trauma?
You are not broken because you experienced trauma. You are a survivor, and that alone is the first step to building yourself back up again. You are capable of finding your authentic self, and what you will discover is that you are much more resilient than you think. You are capable, and you are brave, and we know you can get through this because you were strong enough to start the journey of searching for support. Now let us help you do the rest.
Reconnecting with your authentic self again is possible with therapy.
